This Week’s Episode (3.30.15): Schuyler Totman

This week’s guest is Schuyler Totman, Master Coach at Boot Camp for New Dads. An innovative program featuring “real men, real babies, real world advice,” Boot Camp for New DadsĀ is a unique father-to-father, community-based workshop that inspires and equips men of different economic levels, ages and cultures to become confidently engaged with their infants, support their mates and personally navigate their transformation into dads.

I attended this program both as a “rookie dad” before my daughter was born, and twice as a “veteran dad” after she was born. The program was easily the best thing I did as I prepared for her to be born, and because I adored it so much, I was extremely excited to feature Schuyler on the show. In Schuyler’s words, Boot Camp for New Dads isn’t as much about enhancing your knowledge, but rather enhancing your confidence. Having a baby is daunting. It’s incredibly helpful getting to sit down with guys who have some at-bats under their belt, and gain some much needed clarity about the first few months are like, how you can best support your wife through childbirth and nursing, and just what exactly you’re getting yourself into.

Schuyler has been a Master Coach for eight years, and leads classes five or six times a month. His story about how he got involved with the program is interesting, and without spoiling the episode outright, I’ll just note that Schuyler has “the gift of confession” and his willingness to talk about his own history and some of his missteps is very powerful. In this week’s episode, we talk about the origin of Boot Camp for New Dads, some of the more interesting stories he’s experienced in his time as coach, and fatherhood in general.

You can find Schuyler Totman on his LinkedIn page, as a published author on Amazon, and on Facebook. And although we don’t talk about it on the episode, you should definitely check out Schuyler’s appearance on “Eric & Jessie: Game On” guiding Denver Broncos Demaryius Thomas, Wesley Woodyard, and Eric Decker through the course.

The episode premieres on Wednesday, April 1. And you can find it on iTunes, Stitcher, and the Jon of All Trades homepage.
